How to bathe a dog
The fact that a dog should not be bathed frequently on health grounds is a myth. Some part of it is true and other part is not. The dog can be allowed to swim in natural water which is also a good exercise for the dog. this can be permitted in accordance to its taste and climate. Though bathing the dog regularly by soaps and shampoos can be hazardous for the dog. Human shampoos should not be applied on dogs as it can cause an imbalance of sweat on dog's skin and may make its skin dry and itchy, though, mild human shampoos can be used once in one month. Shampoos especially made for dogs are much better and are recommended for use only once every several weeks. Medicated shampoos which are meant to cure certain disorders of skin etc. are different and the dog's condition has to ascertained prior to deciding upon the frequency of use of the shampoo.
It is recommended to bathe the dog only when its coat gets greasy or you are about to have a company. The fact that the dog needs a bathe can also be assertained if we get an odor from the dog's body. Mud dries up and falls off the dog's coat by itself as it rubs it on. In order to bathe the dog, a blanket should be laid on the floor and two towels, dog shampoo, dog conditioner and a washcloth should be kept ready near the bathtub. The dog's brush, comb and trash bag should be kept on the blanket. Specific super-absorbent towels are very helpful in drying the dog quickly. If the coat of the dog is matted, brush him first to untangle the knots and then bathe him. Sometimes, the dog gets too scared in the tub and keep jumping around, in that case, you might try to give him the shower with the hand-held showerheads. The dog will feel safe and soundif its able to stand on firm ground.
A non-slippery rubber bath mat can be put inside the tub to keep your pooch from slipping. Large dogs can be conveniently bathed in the garden by making use of a hose and a bucket, especially in hot weatherconditions. Its not wise to dump water on dog's face. A washcloth should be used instead. As the ears of the dog shouldn't get too wet inside as it gets too scared when doused over the head and may get aggressive. The best choice is ofcourse a good dog shampoo but a baby shampoo or a mild herbal shampoo can also be used sometimes. A good mild conditioner helps to prevent tangles, in the dogs with long hair. It is a good practice to shampoo, rinse and condition the dog's skin and coat in order to keep lice and fleas away from dogs. Proper deodorants can be used to keep off the body odor and keep the dog smelling fresh and healthy. There are some shampoos which claim to be gentle yet effective, perform antibacterial and anti-fungal action, have pearlescent whiteners for that shiny sparkling whiteness in the coat and gentle aloe Vera and tea tree oil to keep the skin shining healthy. There are special shampoos for dogs with black and dark colored coats, they can use special shampoos with them in order to enhance their natural shine. Rinsing isvery important after lathering and cleaning the dog as any shampoo residue may cause skin irritation. Shampoos which are mild for eyes are recommended. Very often dogs give a good shake, soaking you and the entire room. The best method to dry your pet is to use one end of a first towel over his head and drying him with the other end. In order to pick him up, the second towel is used. After drying, the dog should be laidon the blanket and should be kept there until he dries completely.
