Boils on dogs is a common canine infection, boils filled with pus can be really painful for the dog. Boils or 'Furuncles' are normally abscesses that are deep localized skin infections.   • First and foremost,the dog's personal hygiene has to be properly taken care of. He should be given a proper bath at least once in 10 days, with a good antibacterial soap.
  • An Elizabethan collar (shaped like a truncated cone) should be tied to the dog's neck. This will prevent him from licking the wound and spreading the injury.
  • Giving processed and packaged food to the dog needs to be avoided. The dog's diet should contain lots of fresh and leafy vegetables.
  • It is beneficial to bathe the dog with water which was boiled with neem leaves. Neem, which is a natural antiseptic will help in killing the surface bacteria.
  • Crush a teaspoon of white millet and linseed. Sprinkle the powder in the dog food. This might prove fruitful in repairing the tissue.
  • A piece of cloth after dipping in castor oil should be lightly dabbed over the boils. This helps in draining out the infection.
  • After dipping a washcloth in hot water or hot ginger tea, it should be compressed to the boil. This will help to reduce the pain and draw the pus to the surface.
  • The dog should be fed with plenty of fresh water. This will help him in purifying and detoxifying his internal system.
  • Apply turmeric paste or few drops of tea tree oil to the wound. This will provide a lot of comfort and also help in healing the wound.


These time-tested therapeutic home remedies may be used to treat the problem of boils in your dog. Once the boil has drained out, it should be washed with an antibacterial soap and some medicated ointment and a bandage should be applied. The dog should be prevented from licking the wound. If the boils still persist, a veterinarian should be consulted. He will recommend various oral antibiotics or other topical treatments to treat the problem.
