Determining Dog Breeds
Its quite common for dog owners to wonder about the identity of their dog or the dog breed. Man used various techniques like selective breeding and geographical isolation to create new dog breeds. They were normally domesticated to do his bidding. This practice has given rise to the evolution of various breeds of dogs. Normally, DNA testing is enough to identify the breed of a purebred dog, with about 99% accuracy. Other factors such those of physical and personality traits can also play a big role in identifying the breed of your dog. In the following article we have tried to narrate how we can tell the breed of a dog by noticing certain prominent characteristics in his body.
How to Tell the Breed of Your Dog
- At first you need to determine the vital statistics of your dog. Carefully measure the height of your dog, till his weathers. Also keep and eye on his weight. It needs to be kept in mind that height and weight varies between the males and females of the same breed species, like for e.g. a standard male German Shepherd may stand tall at 24" to 26", but a female of the same species may reach upto a height not more than 22".
- The second step is to carefully note the structure of his face and head. Observe his eyes, ears, nose and shape of his muzzle and teeth structure. Notice if his ears are droopy or pointed, clear or feathery. Different breeds of dogs show different facial markings and can be a good indication for determining your dog's breed. For e.g. a pug has a stout face, whereas dogs of the Spitz breed have foxy and pointed faces.
- Next, you should feel the fur of your dog. Does he have a heavy or a short coat ? Notice the texture of the hair ? Is the hair wavy, shaggy or straight ? Then, a careful observation of the coat's color needs to be done. Look whether its single colored and uniform or is it multi-colored, with patches, like for e.g. dogs like Boxer and Labrador have short-coats, whereas Terrier and spitz breeds are well known for their fine and silky coat.
- Never overlook the tail of a dog. A tail plays a big role in telling about the breed of dog. See if your dog has a wiry tail or a plumed tail. Breeds like the Terrier breed have a feathery and flowing tail, whereas some breeds, like the Dalmatian, have a thin and straight tail, without much hair. Whereas, in case of breeds like Stumpy-tailed Cattle dogs,a naturally short tail is present. Another factor which helps in determining the breed of a dog is the structure and the density of hair on his tail.
- A very important mark of determining the breed of your dog is his psychological make-up and his tempartment. Some dog breeds are innately even tempered and have a mild demeanor. These dog breeds can be easily trained as good house dogs. On the other side, some breeds are ferocious and wild in nature, which is sometimes a hereditarily acquired disposition.
- Another strong factor in determining the breed of a dog is the energy level which the dog shows during physical activities.
So, these key steps can be easily tried at home if you are having problems in determining your dog's breed and see the your observation qualities.
