Diseases in Dogs
Although there are a variety of dog diseases that should be handled by the qualified veterinarians only, here, we will discuss some of the more common ones and give a touch to the various subjects lightly, to get a general idea about our beloved companion pets. Dog diseases can broadly be classified into genetic, parasitic, viral and bacterial diseases. Each and every disease has its own particular cause but a change in the dog's behavior makes it possible for the pet owner to see and understand that the dog is sick and ill. There are more than 300 diseases of canines that are mainly hereditary, the most common ones are:
- Atopic dermatitis
- Deafness
- Glaucoma
- Hip & elbow displasia
- Hypothyroidism

- Rheumatoid arthritis.
However, the good thing is that their impact can be reduced by careful breeding practices, inexpensive vetinary treatments and minor surgeries. There are some diseases that are specific to dog breeds such as Sebaceous adentitis to Poodles, in which there is hair loss and coat becomes greasy, and bladder stones in Dalmatians, which can be checked with proper breeding and giving a low-protein diet.
Internal parasites in canines can be Protozoa or worms. Mosquito bites are responsible for injecting heartworm larva into dogs. External parasites are usually fleas and ticks that are hosts to tapeworms and protozoa respectively. These parasites try to invade the digestive system and blood streams of the dogs and may cause diseases like :
- Babesiosis
- Coccidiosis

- Leishmaniasis
These should be attended to quickly, as severe protozoa infections may prove fatal for your loved companion. However, most of the dog diseases, especially the infectious ones are those that are caused by viruses and bacteria.
