Dog Adoption

As the saying goes, humanity and kindness go hand in hand. All the animal lovers have a soft corner for their furry companions and love to provide for them, care for them and love them. Adopting a homeless dog is itself an act of kindness. The new owner finds an unwavering devotion, loyalty and companionship throughout his lifetime. Alhough, it may take quite some time and patience on the part of the person who has choosen to adopt, he gets a lot of rewards in return, these animals wait for their new owner anxiously at home till he returns.

The pet accepts his new owner without questioning his lifestyle and runs to hug him and is content when he is petted. The bonding between the pet and the owner is one of the most beautiful and satisfying relations in the world. It is very interesting and satisfying to see how the two specials, naturally abhorrent to each other, live in harmony in a loving home and even become the best playmates forever. Friendships between cats and dogs is also included in these type of relationships.

The very first step in adopting a dog is to select the correct type of dog which should suit your lifestyle. You will have to decide whether you want a large dog or a small one according to the space available to you. You may either want to have an active companion that loves to go hiking or a gentle one that is contented to sit in your lap and be petted regularly. There are cute dogs having long fur, the smooth-coated ones that shed very little. Guardian dogs need to be more intelligent and stronger while toy dogs need to be gentle, cute and easily sociable. There are hundreds and thousands of dogs in the streets which need the attention of a kind hearted soul so as to adopt one. But, while adopting one, it needs to be seen that the dog which is being adopted suits your personality type.

Following are some of the things that need to be kept in mind before adopting a dog :

  • The size of the dog should be in accordance with the size of the house. There are different and different breeds of dogs for flats, unit houses and farmhouses.
  • Urban and suburban areas suit one breed while rural and semi-rural areas are convinient for other breeds.
  • While choosing a dog, it needs to be seen whether there is a backyard at home or not where energetic dogs can have a good room to play.
  • It needs to be seen whether the dog remains contented to be chained or stay within the property limits or whether he is a natural wanderer.
  • The amount of exercise that the dog needs on a regular basis so as to direct his energy in the right direction.
  • The time you can spare for your dog to play with etc.
  •  It needs to be seen that old people and children in the family are not bothered in any way later by the dog which is going to be adopted.
  • The age group and the fitness level of the dog owner and the main dog sitter.
  • One has to look into the energy level of the dog and whether its comfortable for the owner.
  • Every dog, be it the toy or small dogs such as Pekingese, medium dogs such as Cocker Spaniel and large dogs such as German Shepherd Giant and St. Bernard have all their exclusive uses.
  • The price of the dog and its daily maintenance cost.
  • It is to be seen that the length of coat of the dog is preferable. Smooth coated ones such as Basset Hound, dogs with short coat such as German Shepherd, medium coated ones such as Cocker Spaniel or long-coated ones such as Maltese, all have different looks and are suitable for different climatic conditions. Long coated dogs who have to stay in warmer regions need to be kept cool constantly by air-conditioning, while smooth-coated ones having to stay in cold countries will need warming up, thus, increasing their maintenance cost.
  • The amount of grooming that the dog demands.
  • One of the most important issues is the purpose for adopting the dog. There are some dogs which are so sociable that they are contented to keep quiet when strangers come into the house, while some breeds are merely threatening with barking but rarely bite while some other breeds are quite dangerous and can attack any stranger dangerously.
  • One thing that will determine how social and adjustable a dog you might need is the number of dogs and cats that you already own.
  • The training level, fitness level, age and health of the dog.

So, deciding to adopt a dog is no fun. A lot of things need to be seen and considered. Everyone in the family needs to be thought of. You have to think about the time you can spare for the dog etc. So, first think properly and then take the right decission. Good luck !
