Dog Training Tips

It is very essential that dogs be trained as pets so as to teach them manners and etiquettes. This will make them behave properly with the owner, children as well as strangers. Dogs often suffer behavioral problems such as climbing up on sofas and beds, urinating and passing stool here and there and pester you to always play with them and keep talking to them meaning that they need 100% attention of yours all the time. They don't even understand the basic instructions such as to respond when called to fetch a newspaper, to sit down or they don't heed to you. It is here that dog training comes into play. It helps the dogs to incultate the basic habits and to heed to his master's direction and commands.

Training helps the dogs find and understand his position in the family and accept behaving better as a part of life. 'Positive Reinforcement' is often the best method recommended to teach anything to dogs. The dog should be taught to earn food, treats, walks or being loved and petted on head by learning a new trick or command.

The dogs can be started with basic training such as 'Sit', 'Down' and 'Stay' and gradually be moved to the simpler tricks such as 'Shake', 'Speak' and 'Roll Over' to the more complex commands and tricks such as 'Fetch The Ball', 'Fetch The Newspaper' or 'Jump Through The Ring'. It is important to train the dog to perform at least one of the commands before getting him awarded with any reward such as food, walk or love. The dog can be taught to sit while you put the leash before taking him out for a walk, or make him lie down and stay still until you fill his bowl and put it down before him. He can be taught to sit and shake hands until you throw the ball for him to fetch or even lie down and roll over to make you pet him or rub his belly. Until the dog drops his resistance and starts obeying your commands he should not be rewarded with anything.

Patience is the key while training a dog. Sometimes, a dog pay offer much resistance for a few minutes before being taught a new trick, this problem should be tacked by giving him some space and then trying to teach him the same trick again. We have to make sure that dog understands what we want him to do, before withholding his food or walks. It is seen that while some dogs are more submissive, others are dominant in nature and quite often challenge their owners to gain the control. While others prefer to manipulate the owners instead of being aggressive, growling, snarling, or snapping. They make use of their affectionate behavior and are subtle yet 'pushy'.

Often fearful dogs feel more comfortable by obeying commands and knowing their place in the hierarchy. It makes them feel more secure and confident. There are many dogs who consider children as their playmates rather than superiors as they are smaller and play with them more often. In such cases, it is necessary for the children above eight years of age to know the training command for their canine companions.
