When to House Train a Dog

It is to be seen that you bring home a pup that is not more than 6-7 weeks old. Because it is easy to train him at an early stage. It is during this period that his behavior can be moulded properly. Once the pup crosses 7 weeks of age, it gets difficult to inculcate new habits in him because by then he already learns and develops some set patterns of behavior which can get very difficult to be changed or modified later. On the other hand, younger puppies are very curious and gregarious and they easily adopt necessary behavioral changes. It should also be remembered that during this period your pup also closely watches and gauges your behavior and easily accepts you as a companion or mentor. The pup also welcomes you to his life and he wants a similar response from you. So, its very important to develop a healthy and friendly bond with your new pet during these early stages of acquaintance.

Potty Training

Housebreaking is all about making your pup learn adequate toilet habits or potty-training. Below we have mentioned some quick dog potty training tips.

The pup should be confined in a crate. He will tend to bark and want to get out whenever he wants to clear his bowel. If you happen to see him in his 'pre-potty syndromes' like going round in circles and sniffing, gently lift him up and take him outside. Its important to show your displeasure by rebuking softly.

He should be leashed and taken to the same spot everyday. Wait patiently till he completely evacuates himself. He might take several attempts in doing the same.

  • He should be reprimanded lightly whenever you catch him soiling the floor or the carpet. But, don't show aggressiveness.
  • Its good to make him follow a regimented life during his initial days of training. Make a fixed routine for him to eat, sleep and play.
  • Paper Training' should be avoided at all costs because once he is allowed to potty in papers, it will be a daunting task for you to change this habit in him and potty outside.
  • Its good to praise him whenever he runs outdoors to potty. Better give him a treat or lightly pat him. Just make him feel that he has done something good.
  • It may so happen that your puppy might not master all the potty-training habits at one go. But, if you guide him well and show patience he will be a quick learner. If you make use of these simple tricks of potty training, you will observe that your puppy will be housetrained quickly and gradually grow up to be a wonderful housemate.
