How to Potty Train a Dog Puppy
The joy when a new pet is brought home is similar to the joy experienced during the birth of a new-born child. When a new puppy arrives in the family, its very important on the part of the owner to maintain a strong bond with the new member of your family from the very first day. It is also very important to housetrain the puppy as early as possible, especially potty training. If you show a careless attitude or for that matter, a lack of proper interaction between you and your pet, it might lead to permanent problems with your pet's potty habits. You might be left with a dog that soils the carpets and always leaves a reeking smell indoors. Moreover, keep in mind that your puppy is a little baby. If he doesn't understand you for the first few days, dont get restless and mad. He needs some time to understand your instructions and grasp the importance of going outdoors to potty. So, its important to train him with patience. It is completely your responsibility to look into the puppy's potty habits before he really masters the trade. For most puppy-owners, its quite a daunting task to effectively potty train their puppies. But, potty training is not that difficult if you know how and where to start with. Please check out the following tips to know how to potty train your puppy quickly.
Puppy Potty Training Tips
- It needs to be understood that puppies don't have the endurance level of an adult dog. Its quite difficult for them to control their bladder and bowels for a long time. So, give them a little time to develop outdoor potty habits.
- Its not a good idea to 'paper-train' your puppy during the initial days of potty training. Once the puppy is paper-trained indoors, he will need to be trained all over from the beginning for outdoor potty habits.
- You can confine your puppy in a crate when you are sleeping/ outdoors or not observing him (Crate Training). Pet stores keep a variety of crates from which you can select and purchase one which suits the puppy.
- Its important to follow a routine for the puppy during those potty training days. Make him go to bed/ get up from bed at the same time every day. Make your puppy eat dry/ bolus food (especially if you feed him packaged food) during potty training days. This way he will have solid stools.
- If you see that your puppy is trying to clear his bowel or bladder inside the house premises, alert him by saying "No" or clapping your hands, and carefully lift him and take him outside and wait for him to finish of with the task.
- During the initial training period, its bad to punish or scold him if he clears his bowels inside. But, gently, make it clear to him that it is not proper.
- Its a good habbit to leash your puppy and take him to the same spot (where you want him to potty) everyday.
- Its important to praise your puppy whenever he eases himself outdoors.
- Its better not to confine the puppy inside rooms that have rugs and carpets. The floor should be kept bare, so that it is easier to clean if the puppy potties indoors.
- You need to remain patient when you take him to potty. Give him time to evacuate completely. Sometimes, he may take two to three tries.
- Its a good habit to clean the puppy's potty place after he evacuates.
- You will need to consult a veterinarian if your puppy hasn't learnt the potty habits even after his four months of age.
We hope these tricks will be helpful to potty train your puppy with ease. If you still think that it is not possible on your part to provide the potty training then its better for you to buy a trained pup or an adult dog that is already potty trained and saves you the trouble.
