Travelling With Your Dog
Most of the dogs are adventurous in nature and like travelling. They have a natural hunting instinct and it is because of this reason that they crave to see new places and meet new people. But this behavior of theirs may sometimes pose a problem for the owner and the owner will need to think twice before taking the dog out on a trip for many reasons.
Its quite natural for people to be afraid of dogs. If the dog messes up things while travelling then its really troublesome for the owner. Many hotels as well as public transport services do not allow pets like dogs and cats.
A full-time pet sitter is required to look after the dog while you are on a trip. Sometimes its needed to get the dog enrolled in a professionally managed kennel while you are away for a long period. Before enrolling the dog in a professional kennel you have to make sure that the kennel, where you intend to keep your dog is comfortable, clean and safe. The dogs kept there should look happy and cared for. There are some kennels which allow you to give dog's their own bed, food and toys for his use during your absence. Reputed kennels accept dogs only if they have been vaccinated and immunized properly.
However, if you are eager and have to take your loved companion with you, you should keep an eye on the following tips:
- A health certificate from your vet should be collected for your dog.
- Sturdy dog crates or carriers are absolutely essential. There are some airlines that sell dog carriers which are very sturdy yet expensive.
- There are some airlines that allow your dog to accompany you in the passenger compartment while others prefer to keep them in the luggage compartment.
- Dogs normally need well-ventilated and air-conditioned vehicles to keep them cool.
- Keep an eye on the dog so that he does not stick his head out of the car window while the car is moving.
- Its bad to leave the dog in an unattended parked car. He might suffer from a heat stroke in the process.
- If your dog shows symptoms like fast pulse, rapid panting, red eyes and gums, excessive slobbering, fever or vomiting, then he immediately needs the attention of a vet. Better, place some cool towels on your dog and take him to the nearest vet center immediately.
- Each country has its own sets of rules regarding traveling with pets. Its better to obey the law regarding the same so as to avoid any hassles later.
- It is always helpful to keep handy a valid rabies vaccination certificate and an official health certificate in the other country's native language, notarized at the local consulate.
- Get a pet identification tag for your dog first, before taking him on a road trip, the tag needs to be complete with the dog's name, owner's name and contact number.

- Its a good idea to get a dog seat belt harness for riding the car.
- Make sure that you take along your dog's beloved food and treats with you, atleast, enough to last for the duration of the trip.
- Pack water, leash, dog dishes, brush, favorite dog toys, plastic bags, towels, dog wear and dog carriers or houses and all the things that will keep your dog happy and gay during the trip.
- Its essential to stop at regular intervals, like say every 2-3 hours to allow your dog to clear his bladder and offer him water.
