Veterinary Dog Care

  • It is very important that the veterinarian for the dog is likable and trustworthy.
  • Its necessary that the dog should be taken to the same veterinarian so that it lends a degree of familiarity to the dog too, making him more comfortable.
  • The visit to the veterinarian should be planned beforehand and prior to visitting him all the necessary point and queries regarding the dog should be jot down. Its necessary to seek information about potential problems from your veterinarian.
  • While visiting a veterinarian, one may need a need a stool sample of the dog, inoculation records. One should gather knowledge about flea and tick prevention and control programs and measures, one should also ask information about symptoms and prevention of heart worm tests and Parvo Virus, Rabies Virus etc. and learn to treat minor injuries and get prescription for a good antiseptic cream for daily use.
  • One can make use of a syringe without the needle to feed liquid medicine that can be inserted in the mouth of the dog, when it is closed behind his canine teeth. This should be given slowly and gently.
  • In order to give pills to the dog, the best posture is to make him sit down upright and tilt his head back. The lips should then be lifted away from his teeth and the upper jaw should be held by the gums behind the canine teeth and and then pushed down on the lower jaw with the other hand and place the pill in the very back of his throat. The mouth should then be closed and his throat should then be stroked softly until pill is swallowed.

  • A dog's normal breathing rate ranges from 15 to 20 per minute while normal heartbeat ranges from 100 to 150 beats per minute.
  • The pulse rate of a dog can be checked under his chest or under his rear leg where it joins the body.
  • The body temperature of a dog is checked using a rectal thermometer and this should normally range from 100 to 102 degrees farhenite.
  • The mucus membrane of the dog such as the tongue, gums and inside of eyelids should be healthy pink in colour. The presence of any other color indicates sickness.
  • If a dog shows change in behavior and untimely laziness, growling, snarling or irritability, it may indicate that the dog needs to be taken to the veterinarian.
